Blacktown Waitangi Festival 2018

Dear NZ Veterans, last Saturday NZ WWII (Bougainville/Guadalcanal/Korea) Veteran 439873 Ken Frank attended the Waitangi Day festival at Blacktown and thanks to the Maori Wardens, Ken also participated in the Powhiri (official welcome) as an official guest.

However, before attending the festival Ken also stopped off at Nuragingy Reserve to view the Pou which is located next to the New Zealand Gardens. The Pou were erected as part of the Sister City relationship Blacktown has with Porirua and the official unveiling of the Pou was held in 2014.

As it was a hot day for the festival, after the Powhiri and lunch, Ken took a quick tour of the grounds before heading home again.

Although, before heading home, Ken did stop at Brent Kerehona’s stall whereby Brent was educating visitors about the Tiriti o Waitangi. Brent is an ADF Veteran and the son of NZ Vietnam Veteran Taawhi Kerehona.

And usually when we head home, we stop off for the traditional Chocolate Magnum but the heat required us to forego the Magnum for an Ice Cream instead which included a Cadbury Flake.

Thank you Ken for always attending the many community events in NSW and thank you Maori Wardens for supporting Ken.

Furthermore, thank you to the community for your support and we hope you enjoyed the day and evening.

Ken, I am sure, will enjoy a well deserved rest now as the next event is a few weeks away.
